Integrating physiology into correlative models can alter projections of habitat suitability under climate change for a threatened amphibian

چکیده
Rapid global change has increased interest in developing ways to identify suitable refugia for species of conservation concern. Correlative and mechanistic distribution models (SDMs) represent two approaches generate spatially-explicit estimates climate vulnerability. SDMs distributions using statistical associations between environmental variables presence data. In contrast, use physiological traits tolerances areas that meet the conditions required growth, survival reproduction. assume modeled influence directly or indirectly; however, mechanisms underlying these are rarely verified empirically. We compared habitat suitability predictions a correlative-only SDM, SDM correlative framework incorporated layers (‘hybrid models'). Our comparison focused on green salamanders Aneides aeneus, priority amphibian threatened by throughout their disjunct range. developed experiments measure thermal sensitivity resistance water loss (ri) metabolism. Under current conditions, correlative-only, hybrid predicted similar overlap suitability; extend into regions without but known harbor many lungless salamanders. future warming scenarios, depended scenario type. 42% reduction 260% increase area considered be depending scenario. Climate change may threaten habitat suitability of threatened plant species within Chinese nature reserves
Climate change has the potential to alter the distributions of threatened plant species, and may therefore diminish the capacity of nature reserves to protect threatened plant species. Chinese nature reserves contain a rich diversity of plant species that are at risk of becoming more threatened by climate change. Hence, it is urgent to identify the extent to which future climate change may comp...
متن کاملIntegrating climate change into habitat conservation plans under the U.S. endangered species act.
Habitat Conservation Plans (HCPs) under the Endangered Species Act (ESA) are an important mechanism for the acquisition of land and the management of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. HCPs have become a vital means of protecting endangered and threatened species and their habitats throughout the United States, particularly on private land. The scientific consensus that climate is changing and...
متن کاملLand Use Compounds Habitat Losses under Projected Climate Change in a Threatened California Ecosystem
Given the rapidly growing human population in mediterranean-climate systems, land use may pose a more immediate threat to biodiversity than climate change this century, yet few studies address the relative future impacts of both drivers. We assess spatial and temporal patterns of projected 21(st) century land use and climate change on California sage scrub (CSS), a plant association of consider...
متن کاملQuantifying Florida Bay habitat suitability for fishes and invertebrates under climate change scenarios.
The Florida Bay ecosystem supports a number of economically important ecosystem services, including several recreational fisheries, which may be affected by changing salinity and temperature due to climate change. In this paper, we use a combination of physical models and habitat suitability index models to quantify the effects of potential climate change scenarios on a variety of juvenile fish...
متن کاملClimatic suitability of Aedes albopictus in Europe referring to climate change projections: comparison of mechanistic and correlative niche modelling approaches.
The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, is capable of transmitting a broad range of viruses to humans. Since its introduction at the end of the 20th century, it has become well established in large parts of southern Europe. As future expansion as a result of climate change can be expected, determining the current and projected future climatic suitability of this invasive mosquito in Europe ...
